LIVINGSTON
– Having already locked up the East
Division’s No. 4 seed in the upcoming Gulf
South Conference tournament, the North
Alabama softball team showed no ill effects
of playing a meaningless series at West
Alabama Saturday evening. The Lions won the
first game 3-1 and held a commanding 10-3
fourth-inning lead before the second game
was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The win is the 20th straight
for UNA (25-18 overall, 13-9 GSC) over West
Alabama.The Tigers fall to 28-29, 6-16.
In game one,
UNA scored three runs in the top of the
sixth inning to rally for to victory.
Following an RBI-double by UWA’s Laura
Bagwell in the bottom of the fifth inning,
the Lions answered in the top of the sixth.
Andrea Palmer led off the inning with a
double, then later scored from third on an
infield hit by Allie Peterson.
An RBI-double
by Lindsey Greene and a sacrifice fly by
Lindsey Bates gave UNA a two-run lead and
pitcher Megan Niesel retired six of the next
eight batters to record the win.
Niesel struck
out four and allowed five hits to improve to
14-7 on the year. The Tigers’ lone run was
unearned.
The lightning
and rain came one inning too soon in the
second game. The Lions held a commanding
10-3 lead after four complete innings. UNA
was about to lead off the top of the fifth
when the game was called. Five completed
innings must be played for a GSC game to
count. The rain also washed away all stats
for the second game, including Sarah
Whitlow’s 2-for-2 showing with two RBI.
The Lions will
close out the regular season Sunday with a
road double-header against West Georgia,
beginning at 2 p.m. CST.
The following
weekend, UNA will take on GSC West-winner
Arkansas Tech on the open round of the
double-elimination conference tourney.
