SOUTHAVEN, Miss.,
– North Alabama’s run through the 2008 Gulf
South Conference Softball Tournament came to
an end Sunday with a 4-3 loss to Arkansas
Tech in the semi-final round at the
Greenbrook Complex. Trailing 4-0 in the
bottom of the third inning, the Lions
rallied to cut the deficit to a single run,
but would get no closer.
With the loss,
UNA closes out the season with a 28-21
record, including a 2-2 showing in
post-season play. Arkansas Tech (41-16)
advanced to the championship game before
falling to top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville.
The Golden Suns
plated a pair of runs in the top of the
first and third innings.
Each score came
with two outs and only three of the runs
were earned.
The Lions found
their offensive swing in the bottom of the
third when Kim Lee led of the inning with a
triple down the right field line. After
Lindsey Greene reached base on an ATU error,
Lee scored from third on a double steal to
produce UNA’s first run.
Back-to-back
RBI-singles by Maggie Eades and Jennifer
Sharp later made the score 4-3 before ATU
pitcher Casey Hammons recovered to get the
final out with two runners in scoring
position. Those two stranded runners would
prove to be the difference in the game as
neither team would score again. For the
game, UNA left seven runners on base.
Sarah Whitlow
finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate while
Eades went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sabrina
Roberts (11-6) was stuck with the loss after
pitching the first three innings, yielding
three earned runs off six hits.
Sharp was named
to the GSC All-Tournament Team at the
conclusion of the event.
The freshman
from New Market hit .500 for the tourney,
going 6-for-12 at the plate with eight RBI.
She added two doubles and a home run for a
.917 slugging percentage.
