SOUTHAVEN, Miss.,
– Jennifer Sharp went 5-for-7
with seven RBI to lead the University of
North Alabama softball team to a pair of
wins in the elimination round of the Gulf
South Conference Tournament Saturday in
Southaven, Miss. The freshman first baseman
totaled three extra-base hits, including two
doubles and a home run as the Lions knocked
off Delta State and West Florida to stay
alive in the losers’ bracket.
UNA will play
Arkansas Tech Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. at
the Greenbrook Softball Complex.
Against Delta
State, Sharp went 2-for-4 and drove in four
runs to pace the Lions to a 6-2 victory. The
New Market, Ala., native had a two-RBI
single in the top of the first inning and
hit her second career home run in the fifth
with a two-run shot to left centerfield.
The Lions also
had an RBI-single by Lindsey Bates in the
second inning that scored Kendall Moore.
Sarah Whitlow also scored from first base on
the play after the Delta State outfielder
missed the ball.
On the mound,
Sabrina Roberts improved to 11-5 on the
season. She allowed nine hits but gave up
only one earned run on the day.
Sharp continued
her impressive showing in the second game of
the day with a 3-for-3 performance during a
7-2 win over the Argonauts. Her two-RBI
double began a six-run first inning for the
Lions. Andrea Palmer followed with a
three-run home run before back-to-back
doubles by Moore and Ally Pridmore made the
score 6-0 and West Florida never threatened.
Sharp got her
second double of the game in the bottom of
the second inning. The hit scored Bates, who
singled to reach base. Palmer added a
second-inning single and finished the game
2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI.
In the circle,
Megan Niesel improved to 15-9 on the year
after the complete-game win. The scattered
five hits while striking out four and
walking two.
