CARROLLTON, Ga.,
– The University of North Alabama softball
team picked up a pair of wins on the final
day of the West Georgia Invitational to
improve to 3-2 on the year. The Lions got an
extra-inning victory over Armstrong Atlantic
and a shutout against Georgia Southwestern
Saturday in Carrollton, Ga., to climb above
the .500 mark for the young season.
In the first
game, UNA rallied from a late 5-4 deficit to
post a 10-5 victory in eight innings for its
second win over AAU in as many days.
Entering the top of the sixth inning, the
Lions trailed by the lone run before an
RBI-single by Kim Lee scored Maggie Eades
from third base to tie the game.
UNA put
together a five-run eighth inning to secure
the win. Andrea Palmer got things going with
a pinch-hit three-run homerun to give the
team an 8-5 lead.
The Lions would
push two more runs across the plate in the
inning to secure the five-run victory.
After scoring
four runs in the first inning, UNA held the
lead throughout most of the game. The
Pirates were able to take the 5-4 advantage
by scoring once in the bottom of the first
and two runs each in the third and fifth
innings.
Lee and Sarah
Whitlow each went 2-for-3 for the game and
combined to drive in three runs. Lindsey
Greene also went 2-for-4 and scored twice.
After coming on
in relief, and facing the 5-4 deficit,
freshman Anna Ard got the pitching victory.
She gave up a hit and recorded a strikeout
in 3.1 innings of work to even her season
record at 1-1.
Against Georgia
Southwestern, Megan Niesel pitched the
complete-game shutout and improved to 2-0 on
the year as UNA picked up the 3-0 victory.
Niesel went seven innings, scattering five
hits and getting six strikeouts.
The Lions
scored a single run in the bottom of the
first innings and held the one-run advantage
most of the game. A pair of insurance runs
in the sixth provided the final margin.
Allie Peterson
led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with
a pair of singles.
UNA will return
to action next weekend at the UAH Charger
Chillout. The Lions will play six games in
three days at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur.
