LIONS SWEEP FINAL DAY OF WEST GEORGIA SOFTBALL TOURNEY

CARROLLTON, Ga., – The University of North Alabama softball team picked up a pair of wins on the final day of the West Georgia Invitational to improve to 3-2 on the year. The Lions got an extra-inning victory over Armstrong Atlantic and a shutout against Georgia Southwestern Saturday in Carrollton, Ga., to climb above the .500 mark for the young season.

In the first game, UNA rallied from a late 5-4 deficit to post a 10-5 victory in eight innings for its second win over AAU in as many days. Entering the top of the sixth inning, the Lions trailed by the lone run before an RBI-single by Kim Lee scored Maggie Eades from third base to tie the game.

UNA put together a five-run eighth inning to secure the win. Andrea Palmer got things going with a pinch-hit three-run homerun to give the team an 8-5 lead.

The Lions would push two more runs across the plate in the inning to secure the five-run victory.

After scoring four runs in the first inning, UNA held the lead throughout most of the game. The Pirates were able to take the 5-4 advantage by scoring once in the bottom of the first and two runs each in the third and fifth innings.

Lee and Sarah Whitlow each went 2-for-3 for the game and combined to drive in three runs. Lindsey Greene also went 2-for-4 and scored twice.

After coming on in relief, and facing the 5-4 deficit, freshman Anna Ard got the pitching victory. She gave up a hit and recorded a strikeout in 3.1 innings of work to even her season record at 1-1.

Against Georgia Southwestern, Megan Niesel pitched the complete-game shutout and improved to 2-0 on the year as UNA picked up the 3-0 victory. Niesel went seven innings, scattering five hits and getting six strikeouts.

The Lions scored a single run in the bottom of the first innings and held the one-run advantage most of the game. A pair of insurance runs in the sixth provided the final margin.

Allie Peterson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

UNA will return to action next weekend at the UAH Charger Chillout. The Lions will play six games in three days at Wilson Morgan Park in Decatur.
