– Another split in the final day of the UAH
Charger Chillout gave the North Alabama
softball team a 2-2 record at the event and
a 5-4 overall mark. On Sunday, the Lions
picked up a 5-3 win over Truman State before
coming up short in an upset bid of defending
national champion and No. 1-ranked Southern
Illinois-Edwardsville.
After falling
behind on three occasions, the Lions rallied
to tie each time before running out of gas
in a 6-4 loss to the Cougars. SIUE took
leads of 1-0, 3-1 and 4-3 in the first four
innings. Each time, however, UNA was able to
knot the score, at 1-1, 3-3 and 4-4. The
Cougars were able to score the go-ahead runs
in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of
solo home runs to improve to 6-1 on the
season.
Lindsey Bates
led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with
a double and a solo home run. She finished
the game with three RBI and a run scored.
Lindsey Greene also scored twice and
finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.
Megan Niesel
suffered her first loss of the season. The
junior fell to 3-1 after allowing eight hits
with a strikeout in 4.1 innings of work.
In the first
game, Bates went 2-for-3, with an RBI-single
and a solo home run to lead the Lions to the
5-3 win. UNA held a slim 3-2 lead after the
Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the
fourth inning. The Lions scored twice in the
bottom of the inning to help pull away.
Bates and
Greene each went 2-for-3 from the batter’s
box while Sarah Whitlow also drove in two
runs with a double. Sabrina Roberts (1-1)
picked up her first win of the year after
scattering six hits over five innings. Anna
Ard record her first career save.
The Lions will
hit the road for Arkadelphia, Ark., next
weekend for six games at the
Arkansas-Monticello Classic. UNA will take
on the host Cotton Blossoms, as well as
Division I Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Gulf
South Conference West Division foes Arkansas
Tech and Ouachita Baptist in the three-day
span beginning Feb. 29.
