Game 4
PENSACOLA, Fla.,
– The University of North Alabama softball
team opened the 2009 season with a 2-2
showing at the GSC/SSC Crossover over the
weekend at the UWF Softball Complex in
Pensacola. After an 11-2 loss to Nova
Southeastern on Friday, the Lions took two
of the next three games from Columbus State.
Head coach Jeremy Reece moved over 200
career wins in the process.
Against Nova, senior Sarah Whitlow provided
the only offense for UNA with a 2-for-3
showing at the plate, including a two-run
double. Megan Niesel took the loss on the
mound.
Niesel would rebound and get a pitching
victory the following day by coming on in
relief as the Lions posted a
7-6 extra-inning win over CSU. Andrea Palmer
had a solo home run and Jennifer Sharp had a
two-run double to provide the winning runs.
In the second game against the Cougars,
Jennifer Sexton recorded a two-hit shutout
as UNA got the 7-0 win. The junior
moved to 1-0 on the year with the
complete-game victory. Cassandra McKinney
and Ally Pridmore had two hits each, while
Sharp hit a grand slam in the fifth inning.
Columbus State avoided the sweep on Sunday
with a 3-1 victory. Trailing by two in the
bottom of the seventh inning, the Lions had
bases loaded with no outs, but were unable
to score a run. Pridmore provided the only
offense of the day for UNA with a solo home
run in the sixth inning.
UNA will now turn its attention to the UAH
Charger Chillout next weekend. The Lions
will play six games in three days at
Decatur’s Wilson Morgan Park.
