PALMER LEADS SOFTBALL TEAM TO SWEEP OVER KENTUCKY STATE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team picked up a sweep over Kentucky State Tuesday afternoon, winning two games by a combined score of 22-0 at the UNA Softball Complex. Andrea Palmer was 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs and seven RBI on the day as the Lions posted the 8-0 and 14-0 five-inning wins to even their record at 14-14 on the year.

In the first game, the Lions got home runs by Palmer and Jennifer Sharp, while Jennifer Sexton tossed a one-hit shutout in the 8-0 victory.

After Palmer put UNA on top 3-0 with a three-run blast in the first inning, Emily Barnes recorded an RBI-double in the bottom of the second. The hit to center field scored Natalie Harrison, who tripled to lead off the inning.

North Alabama wrapped up the scoring with four runs in the fourth inning. After a triple by Maggie Eades scored two runs, Sharp hit her eighth homer of the season with a blast to deep center field.

Sexton improved to 8-7 on the year with the shutout. She struck out eight batters and only had two base runners after a first-inning error in the infield and a fifth-inning walk.

Barnes led the Lions by going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Eades and Sharp added two RBI each to going along with the three runs driven in by Palmer.

In the second game, Palmer drove in four more runs, including an RBI-single in the second inning and another three-run homer in the bottom of the third. She finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate and crossed home plate three times.

UNA got the scoring started with four runs in the first, then, added five runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. Sharp, Kathryn Young and Allie Peterson also added two hits each for the Lions.

Laurin Watts (6-7) picked up the win on the mound. The freshman struck out six batters and scattered five hits in five innings of work.

North Alabama will return to Gulf South Conference play this weekend. The Lions will hit the road for double-headers at West Florida on Friday and Valdosta State on Saturday. UNA’s next home game will be on March 27 against Alabama-Huntsville.
