WAITES NAMED EAST DIVISION FRESHMAN OF THE
YEAR
BIRMINGHAM
- The University of North Alabama women’s
tennis team was well represented Friday when
officials with the Gulf South Conference
released the 2007 All-GSC Tennis Teams. The
Lions had one player earn first-team honors
and had two make the second team, including
the East Division’s Freshman of the Year.
Mallory Waites,
a freshman from Birmingham, received
second-team honors and became the first Lion
to earn freshman-of-the-year honors since
2002. Playing the majority of the season at
No. 1 singles, she compiled a 6-6 record at
the top spot heading into the GSC
tournament. She also went 9-8 in doubles
action.
Sophomore
Yuliya Zelenskaya was a first-team
selection. After earning second-team honors
in 2006, the standout from Almaty,
Kazakhstan, was 8-7 in singles competition
this season, including a 6-4 mark at the No.
2 spot. In doubles play, she posted a 12-5
record with various teammates, and went 7-3
when paired with Arrie Moore.
Lori Colby
rounded out the listed of honorees for UNA.
The senior from Sarasota, Fla., was 7-7 on
the year after seeing action at the No. 2
and No. 3 spots. She also went 9-7 in
doubles competition.
“We are
extremely proud off all three of these
ladies,” said UNA head coach Al Morgan.
“Mallory winning Freshman of the Year was
one of our many goals we had when we
recruited her. The program has a bright
future and I hope this is the first of many
awards to come.”
