MONTGOMERY
– The University of North Alabama men’s and
women’s tennis teams each won their first
match of the Gulf South Conference
tournament Saturday before falling in the
semi-finals at Lagoon Park.
Both teams will
await a bid to play in the regional round of
the NCAA Division II Tournament, which
begins May 1
The UNA women
knocked of Harding 6-1 before dropping a 5-1
decision to eventual tournament champion
Valdosta State. Phillipa Reakes and Jessica
Strucher ran their doubles record to 7-1 on
the season with a victory in each round. The
combo represented the only win for the Lions
against Valdosta State, getting a 9-8
victory.
Against
Harding, UNA took two of the three doubles
matches and also got wins in singles
competition by Reakes (No. 1), Strucher (No.
5) and Mallory Waites (No. 3).
The men’s team
also took two of three doubles matches from
Harding and held on for a 5-3 win over the
Bisons in the first round. The Lions took
victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles before
winning spots two, three and four in singles
competition. Zac Bereznicki, Carlos Cardenas
and Chris Sodemann each notched solo wins.
Sodemann’s 6-1, 6-3 victory in the OBU gave
him a 10-1 season record at the No. 4 spot.
The UNA women
now sport a 9-5 overall record while the
men’s team is 9-6.
