FLORENCE
– The University of North Alabama tennis
teams split a pair of matches against
Division I Western Kentucky Tuesday at home
with the women taking home a 5-2 victory and
the men dropping a 3-4 decision.
Phillipa Reakes
led the UNA women, taking home the 6-2, 6-0
victory at the No. 1 singles spot. The win
gives the freshman from Bath, England a 5-2
record on the year. Yuliya Zelenskaya,
Mallory Waites and Jessica Strucher also
took home singles victories, and the Lions
added a pair of wins in doubles play to
round out the day.
The UNA men
lost the 4-3 decision after playing by the
Division I rulebook. WKU was awarded a
single point for taking two of three doubles
matches. The Hilltoppers won at No. 1 before
Chris Sodemann and Jan Miskos teamed up to
win a 9-8 decision in five sets at the No. 1
spot. A forfeit at the No. 3 spot, however,
resulted in WKU getting the point.
Each team
received three points in singles
competition, giving WKU the victory. The
Lions won three of the five matches played
but had to forfeit the No. 6 spot. Zac
Bereznicki (No. 2), Carlos Cardenas (No. 3)
and Sodemann (No. 4) each took home wins in
singles competition.
Both Lion
tennis teams will return to action on March
13 to take on Division I Austin Peay on the
road.
