The University
of North Alabama tennis teams climbed above
the .500 mark for the season after combining
to post a 5-0 record over spring break. The
men’s team went 3-0 with victories over
North Greenville, Erskine and Brevard to
improve to 6-5 on the year, while the UNA
women improved to 6-4 after knocking off
North Greenville and Presbyterian.
Jan Miskos led
the way for the UNA men, going 3-0 at the
No. 1 spot in all three matches. Zac
Bereznicki, Carlos Cardenas, Chris Sodemann
and Martin Siejka also each had three wins
at the 2-5 spots.
The Lions
defeated North Greenville and Erskine by
identical 7-2 scores before holding off
Brevard 6-3. In the last match, Brevard took
wins in doubles No. 1 and No. 3 to take an
early lead. UNA responded by winning five
straight singles matches before defaulting
at No. 6.
On the women’s
side, Phillipa Reakes went undefeated with
two straight-sets victories. Her four 6-0
wins gives her a 7-2 record at No. 1. She
also picked up a pair of wins in doubles
competition.
After defeating
North Greenville 8-1, the Lions pulled out a
hard-fought win over head coach Al Morgan’s
former school, Presbyterian. UNA took two of
the three doubles matches before PC won
singles matches at No. 2, 3 and 4 to tie the
score at 3-3. Jessica Strucher’s 7-5, 6-1
win at the No. 6 spot clinched the victory
for the Lions.
Both teams are
scheduled to host West Alabama at noon on
April 1, before welcoming Martin Methodist
at 1 p.m. on April 11. The women’s team will
host Montevallo on April 12 at 1 p.m.
