MEN’S TENNIS TEAM COMES UP SHORT 5-2 AT MEMPHIS
MEMPHIS, Tenn.,
– A pair of victories in singles play was not
enough to overcome an early deficit as the
University of North Alabama men’s tennis team
dropped a 5-2 decision to Division I Memphis
over the weekend. Jan Miskos and Mirko
Sommerfeld picked up their first wins of the
season, but the Lions were swept in doubles play
and lost the other four singles matches in
straight sets.
Playing its third consecutive NCAA Division I
opponent to open the season, UNA (0-3) lost 8-5,
8-6 and 8-3 in the first three doubles matches
for an 0-1 overall deficit heading into singles
play.
At the No. 2 position, Miskos took an early 6-4
lead over the Tigers’ Michael Janz before
falling 6-2 in the second set. The senior
rallied to claim the win with a 10-7 score in
the tie-breaker.
Sommerfeld had to rally from an even larger
deficit. After losing the opening set 6-0 to
Michael Hayes at the No. 4 spot. He posted a 7-5
win to stay alive. In the tie-breaker,
Sommerfeld was able to outlast the senior for a
10-7 victory.
North Alabama will take on one more Division I
team on the road before the team’s home opener.
The Lions will play at Western Kentucky on Feb.
27 before hosting NAIA power Martin Methodist on
March 2.
