MEN’S TENNIS TEAM FALLS AT UAB
BIRMINGHAM
– The University of North Alabama men’s tennis
team opened the 2010 season with a 7-0 road loss
Wednesday at Division I Alabama-Birmingham.
The Lions were unable to climb out of an early
hole after being swept in doubles play. UNA fell
8-4 in the first two spots before the No. 3 team
lost an 8-2 decision to give the Blazers an
early 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles play, all six matches were in
straight sets. After knocking off UAB’s top
player a year ago, UNA’s Jan Miskos was unable
to repeat the performance, falling 6-2, 6-4 to
Danny Manlow. Bruno Zuleta (No. 2), Carlos
Cardenas (No. 3), Mirko Sommerfeld (No. 4) and
Clint Johnson (No. 5) also lost straight-set
decisions.
Freshman T.J. Drake had a close call at the No.
6 spot, but eventually came up on the short end
of a 7-6, 6-1 score.
The UNA men will be back on the road against
another NCAA Division I school on Feb. 12
against Lipscomb.
The UNA women’s team will open the season
Saturday at Belmont before returning to
Nashville to join the men and face Lipscomb.
