HILL LEADS DEFENSIVE EFFORT WITH 29 DIGS
FLORENCE, Ala., – A 3-0 sweep over West Florida Saturday
afternoon gave the University of North Alabama volleyball team sole
possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference East
Division.
Both teams entered the showdown at Flowers Hall with undefeated GSC
records before the Lions pulled out the 30-26, 30-28, 30-12 victory.
With the win, UNA improves to 12-5 overall with a 5-0 mark in
conference play. The Argonauts fall to 8-8, 3-1.
Kasie Spencer and Megan Stout led a balanced UNA attack with 13
kills each. Dee Ayres added nine kills, while three other players
had seven kills each for the Lions.
The first two games featured 18 ties
and three lead changes as UNA was able to post a pair of close wins.
In the third contest, the Lions hit .389 as a team, dominating the
game from start to finish. Eleven consecutive serves by Ayres helped
UNA build a 27-9 lead and never look back.
Defensively, the Lions held West Florida to a .181 hitting
percentage. Ashley Hill recorded a season-high 29 digs for the
match, while Danielle Palasak added 12 and Jessica Hansen had 10 on
the day. Laura Bellinger also just missed her fifth triple-double of
the year. The senior had seven kills, 11 digs and 41 assists.
The Lions will step outside of conference play on Thursday for
another home match against Southern Indiana at 7 p.m. UNA will host
GSC East foe West Georgia the following Saturday a 1 p.m. |
