- University of North Alabama senior volleyball player
Dee Ayres has provided another post-season award for the Lions this
year. The middle blocker received first-team honors on the ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-American Team.
Ayres helped UNA to a 35-6 record in 2006, including a trip to the
NCAA Division II national championship match in Pensacola, Fla.
The Rainbow City,
Ala., native was an Academic All-District selection from District IV
and owns a 4.0 grade point average with a major in professional
biology.
On the court, Ayres 2.61 kills and .85 blocks per game this season.
She also had a .259 hitting percentage and 51 service aces.
The award marks the second straight year the UNA volleyball team has
provided an Academic All-American. Last season, senior outside
hitter Vanessa Ferretti was a third-team selection.
Overall, UNA has
had 10 student athletes receive Academic All-America accolades,
including four from the volleyball team.
Ayres joins Rachel Price as the only two volleyball players to
receive first-team honors. Price won the award in 1999.
