VOLLEYBALL TEAM IMPROVES TO 18-5 WITH GSC
WIN
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., - North Alabama trailed in each of the
three games against in-state rival Alabama-Huntsville before pulling
out a 3-0 sweep on the Chargers’ home court Tuesday evening in Gulf
South Conference volleyball action.
Nilcia Oliveira hit .400 for the match with 15 kills as the
19th-ranked Lions remained unbeaten in GSC play with the 30-25,
30-25, 30-24 victory.
In the first game, UAH raced out to an 8-2 lead and led most of the
way until the Lions tied the score at 18-18. The score was tied
again at
21-21 before UNA scored nine of the games final 13 points to get the
win.
Jessica Hansen recorded 10 of her match-high 21 digs in the second
game, which featured five ties and 12 lead changes. With the game
tied at 16-16, UNA was able to pull away down the stretch for
another five-point victory.
The Lions faced another early deficit in game three before rallying
for the win. A kill by Danielle Palasak gave UNA its first lead at
18-17 and the Lions never trailed again. UAH hit just .070 for the
game. Oliveira’s final kill completed the sweep with the 30-24
victory.
UNA, winner of 11 straight matches, is now 18-5 overall with an 8-0
mark in conference play. UAH falls to 6-16, with a 3-5 record in the
league.
Palasak finished the match with 11 kills and 10 digs while Dee Ayres
reached double figures in kills with 10 on the night. Laura
Bellinger also turned in a double-double performance with 12 digs
and 36 assists.
UNA will now turn its attention to the Henderson State Lady Reddie
Classic Oct. 13-14 in Arkadelphia, Ark. The Lions will play four
matches in two days, beginning with No. 25 Missouri Southern State
Friday at noon.
UNA will also face Emporia State Friday at 5 p.m. before wrapping up
the event the next day by facing Northwest Missouri State (11 a.m.)
and Southwest Baptist (5 p.m.). Each of the Lions’ matches will
