OLIVEIRA LEADS VOLLEYBALL TEAM TO 3-0 SWEEP OVER VALDOSTA STATE

VALDOSTA, Ga.,
– Nilcia Oliveira had 17 kills and hit .484 for the match as the University of North Alabama volleyball team swept fellow Gulf South Conference foe Valdosta State 3-0 Saturday evening on the road.
The junior from Joao Pessoa, Brazil improved her season hitting percentage to a team-high .326 as the Lions kept several impressive streaks alive during the 30-15, 32-30, 30-18 win.

Overall, the 18th-ranked Lions (25-5, 11-0) extended their winning streak to 18 matches, which includes 11 straight GSC victories this season. UNA also kept its perfect record against VSU, upping its all-time record to 27-0. The victory also ended the Blazers’ five-match winning streak, leaving them at 17-14 overall with a 5-5 mark in conference play.

The first game featured a strong defensive performance by the Lions as VSU was held to a .000 hitting percentage as a team. The Blazers committed 34 attack errors in the game, while UNA scored nine straight points to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 13-4 lead and take control.

The Lions were held to a .082 hitting percentage in the second game, but managed to pull out the win. A kill by Oliveira gave UNA a 31-30 lead, and the game ended on a bad set by the Blazers’ Niki Patriarca.

The UNA offense came alive again in game three. The team recorded 19 total kills, including seven for Oliveira. After jumping out to an 8-3 lead, the Lions rolled the rest of the way, hitting .320 as a team in the 12-point win.

Danielle Palasak also reached double figures in kills with 10 on the night for UNA. Laura Bellinger added 44 assists with 13 digs for team’s only double-double showing. Jessica Hansen was tops in the dig category with 18 for the match.

The Lions will try to close out their second consecutive undefeated season in GSC play on Tuesday with a road match against West Georgia.
Match time is set for 6 p.m. CST in Carrollton, Ga. UNA will return to Flowers Hall for its final regular-season home match the following Friday against No. 11 Central Missouri State.
