BELLINGER GETS TRIBLE-DOUBLE AS UNA DOWNS FALCONS, COTTON BLOSSOMS


FLORENCE
– The University of North Alabama Volleyball Team opened the 2006 season with a pair of sweeps Friday evening at Flowers Hall.  Playing in the opening day of the UNA Classic, the Lions ninth-ranked defeated Texas Permian Basin and Arkansas-Monticello to begin the year 2-0 and extend an impressive home winning streak.

The nightcap victory over UAM represented the Lions’ 100th consecutive home win against teams from the Gulf South Conference. Danielle Palasak and Dee Ayres had 12 kills each as UNA outscored the Cotton Blossoms 30-18, 31-29 and 30-28.

Jessica Hansen had 15 digs to lead the team, while Ashley Hill added 13 in the match. Laura Bellinger recorded 33 assists and 11digs to complete a solid day.

In the early game against UTPB, Bellinger recorded a triple-double with 10 kills, 42 assists and 11 digs. The senior from Portage, Mich., paced the Lions’ offensive attack, as the team hit .388 in the three- game sweep. She helped the team’s percentage by hitting .714 for the match as the Lions won 30-14, 30-16, 30-20.

Palasak, a junior from Garden City, Mich., added a double-double of her by netting 10 kills and 13 digs, while sophomore Kasie Spencer led the team in kills with 13 for the match. Defensively, Hill had 15 digs to lead all players.

The win over the Falcons extended UNA’s season-opening winning streak to 16 consecutive matches and improved the team’s home-opening streak to 15 straight game.

The Lions will return to action Saturday morning at 11:30 to face Albany State before completing the event with an 8 p.m. showdown with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
