SWEEP BY WEST ALABAMA HANDS LIONS RARE LOSS
LIVINGSTON – Several impressive
streaks came to an end Tuesday as the University of North Alabama
volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to West Alabama at Pruitt
Hall.
The 30-23,
36-34, 30-28 win by the Tigers was the first in the last 23 tries
against UNA. It was also the first Gulf South Conference defeat for
the Lions in 31 matches and the first loss to any GSC school in the
last 46 contests.
Now the Lions
are 7-9 overall with an 0-1 mark in the conference for the first
time since 1995. With the win, West Alabama improves to 15-0 on the
season and is 2-0 in GSC play.
The Tigers
scored six out of the final seven points to take game one 30-23. The
win not only put UWA ahead 1-0 in the match, but broke a streak of
69 straight games won by the Lions in the series.
UNA let a 20-14
lead slip away in the second contest. The Tigers went on a 15-9 run
to tie the game at 29-29 before eventually winning 36-34.
In game three,
the Lions again held early leads at 11-5 and 17-12 before UWA began
its final rally. Seven straight points gave the Tigers a 21-19 lead.
UNA was able to respond and go ahead 28-27 before the home team
scored the game’s final three points to earn the sweep.
Three players
reached double digits in kills for the Tigers. Allison Nail led the
way for UWA with 16 kills on the night
UNA was led by
Danielle Palasak’s 17 kills. No other Lion player had more than six
as the team recorded a season-low .090 hitting percentage.
The Lions will
try to rebound at home on Friday with another conference showdown.
UNA hosts Montevallo at 7 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
