FLORENCE – Danielle Palasak had 18 kills and hit .400 for
the match as the University of North Alabama volleyball team picked
up a key Gulf South Conference win over West Georgia Friday night at
Flowers Hall.
In front of 559
fans, the Lions raced out to an early lead in the first game and
never looked back during the 30-23, 30-18, 30-25 victory. The win
ups UNA’s overall record to 12-10 on the season with a 5-2 mark in
GSC play. The Wolves (19-5) suffered just their fifth loss of the
season and have a 3-3 conference record.
In the first
game, UNA jumped out to a 10-3 lead before the Wolves answered with
a 7-2 run to cut the advantage to 12-10. A series of UWG errors
helped the Lions extend the lead back to eight points and a kill by
Palasak gave UNA its final point and a 30-23 win.
The Lions
scored six straight points to pull away late in the second game. The
game ended when Alison Jacobs served up one of the team’s 12 aces on
the night.
In the third
game, West Georgia’s early 3-2 advantage proved to be the only lead
of the match for the Wolves. Back-to-back kills by Whitney Sanders
helped the Lions build a 9-5 lead and UWG never threatened again.
Jessica Hansen
led the defensive effort for the Lions with 18 digs while Jacobs
turned in an even 40 assists.
UNA will host
Alabama-Huntsville in GSC action Tuesday evening. Match time is set
for 7 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
