HOMESTANDING LIONS DOWN UAH
FLORENCE – The University of
North Alabama volleyball team used a balanced attack Tuesday evening
to pick up a Gulf South Conference victory over Alabama-Huntsville
with a 3-0 sweep at Flowers Hall.
Danielle
Palasak, Beyaca Martin and Whitney Sanders combined for 42 of the
Lions’ 53 kills to lead the team to a 33-31, 31-29, 30-15 victory.
UNA now has a 6-2 GSC record with a 13-10 mark overall. The Lady
Chargers fall to 1-6 in the league with an overall record of 8-20.
As a team, the
Lions hit .345 on the night downing UAH for the 21st straight match.
Martin, a freshman from New Orleans, had 14 kills on the night. The
total was one shy of a season high, but her .591 hitting percentage
was a career-best.
The Lions had
to rally to win the first two contests. In the first game, the Lady
Chargers had game point three separate times before UNA scored three
straight points to turn a 31-30 deficit into a 33-31 win.
North Alabama
jumped out to a big lead in game two, but eventually found itself
trailing 27-24. UAH reached game point first at 29-27 before the
Lions closed the game on a 4-0 run to pick the victory.
Palasak had
eight of her 15 kills in game three as the Lions led wire to wire.
She finished the night with 10 digs to record her 13th double-double
of the season.
Sanders
finished with 13 kills while setter Alison Jacobs had 43 assists to
lead UNA. Jessica Hansen also turned in a match-high 22 digs.
UNA will hit
the road this weekend for a pair of matches at the Montevallo
Coca-Cola Classic. The Lions will play twice on Oct. 12, facing Lynn
at 2 p.m. and Clark Atlanta at 4 p.m. The team will then travel to
Memphis the following day to play Christian Brothers.
