HOMESTANDING LIONS DOWN UAH

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama volleyball team used a balanced attack Tuesday evening to pick up a Gulf South Conference victory over Alabama-Huntsville with a 3-0 sweep at Flowers Hall.

Danielle Palasak, Beyaca Martin and Whitney Sanders combined for 42 of the Lions’ 53 kills to lead the team to a 33-31, 31-29, 30-15 victory. UNA now has a 6-2 GSC record with a 13-10 mark overall. The Lady Chargers fall to 1-6 in the league with an overall record of 8-20.

As a team, the Lions hit .345 on the night downing UAH for the 21st straight match. Martin, a freshman from New Orleans, had 14 kills on the night. The total was one shy of a season high, but her .591 hitting percentage was a career-best.

The Lions had to rally to win the first two contests. In the first game, the Lady Chargers had game point three separate times before UNA scored three straight points to turn a 31-30 deficit into a 33-31 win.

North Alabama jumped out to a big lead in game two, but eventually found itself trailing 27-24. UAH reached game point first at 29-27 before the Lions closed the game on a 4-0 run to pick the victory.

Palasak had eight of her 15 kills in game three as the Lions led wire to wire. She finished the night with 10 digs to record her 13th double-double of the season.

Sanders finished with 13 kills while setter Alison Jacobs had 43 assists to lead UNA. Jessica Hansen also turned in a match-high 22 digs.

UNA will hit the road this weekend for a pair of matches at the Montevallo Coca-Cola Classic. The Lions will play twice on Oct. 12, facing Lynn at 2 p.m. and Clark Atlanta at 4 p.m. The team will then travel to Memphis the following day to play Christian Brothers.
