LIONS FALL TO LYNN IN FIVE, SWEEP CLARK ATLANTA
MONTEVALLO – After dropping a
five-game decision to Lynn, the University of North Alabama
volleyball team rebounded to sweep Clark Atlanta Friday afternoon at
the Coca-Cola Classic on the campus of the University of Montevallo.
The split gives
the Lions a 14-11 record on the season heading into its
non-conference match against Gulf South Conference West Division foe
Christian Brothers on Saturday.
Freshmen led
the way for the Lions in each match. Against Clark Atlanta, Beyaca
Martin had a .613 hitting percentage and a career-high 21 kills to
lead UNA to a 30-20, 30-17, 30-19 victory.
Whitney Sanders
also reached double figures in kills with 11 for the Lions, while
setter Alison Jacobs just missed a triple-double with 10 kills, 33
assists and six digs. Carly Lacey added 14 assists on the match
while libero Jessica Hansen turned in 16 digs.
In the first
match, UNA had a 2-1 lead and a match point twice in game four
before the Knights rallied to steal the win. A kill by Sanders gave
the Lions a 30-29 lead in the fourth contest, but Lynn scored the
game’s final three points to pull out the 32-30 victory. The
momentum from the comeback carried over to the fifth game as the
Knights won the 3-2 match with a 15-10 victory.
In the first
game, Lynn opened the scoring with a 6-0 run and led 12-5 before the
Lions answered. The two teams combined for 72 points as the Knights
pulled out the 37-35 win.
UNA had
dominating performances in the next two contests. The Lions won
30-21 and 30-25, hitting .400 as a team in game two and holding Lynn
to a .100 percentage in the third game.
In the fourth
game, UNA led 29-28 and 30-29 but could not pull out the win. The
Knights scored the final three points on a service error, a service
ace and an attack error to stay alive and force a deciding game
five. In the fifth stanza, Lynn led wire to wire, jumping out to a
12-5 lead in never looking back.
Freshman Katie
Haseltine led the Lions with 21 kills in the match. The Saint Louis
native added 17 digs and added a .400 hitting percentage to complete
a career effort. Sanders had 17 kills for UNA while Jacobs and Sarah
Roberts added career highs with 65 assists and 12 kills
respectively.
