UNA DOWNS LADY BUCS IN FIVE GAMES
MEMPHIS, Tenn., - After being within one point of a
three-game sweep, the University of North Alabama volleyball team
was forced to play five games against Christian Brothers Saturday
evening before holding on for a 3-2 road win.
The Lions won the first two games 30-23 and 30-25, and had a 29-23
lead in the third contest before the Bucs began their comeback. CBU
scored eight straight points to take the game 31-29 and extend the
match.
UNA dropped a
30-27 decision in the fourth game before rebounding in game five
with a dominating performance. The Lions jumped out to an 8-0 lead
and went on to win the fifth game 15-7.
Whitney Sanders and Beyaca Martin led the Lions with 21 and 20 kills
respectively. Martin, a freshman from New Orleans, also picked up
her first career double-double with 10 digs.
Danielle Palasak added 14 kills and 17 digs for UNA, which improves
to 15-11 overall. Alison Jacobs paced the UNA offensive attack with
56 assists, while Jessica Hansen (22 digs) and Katie Haseltine (12
digs) led the defensive effort.
The Lions will now turn their attention back to Gulf South
Conference play with a key match against West Alabama looming. UNA
will host the Tigers at 7 p.m. on Oct. 16 in an event titled October
Madness.
There will be a cookout in front of Flowers Hall at 6 p.m. and the
UNA men’s and women’s basketball teams will take the floor after the
match for introductions and cash and prize giveaways. Lion students
and fans are encouraged to wear black during the match to promote
the theme ‘Black Out Flowers Hall.’
