DOWN 0-2, LIONS WIN THREE STRAIGHT FOR KEY GSC WIN
CARROLLTON, Ga., – After
dropping the first two games against West Georgia, the University of
North Alabama volleyball team rebounded to win three straight and
post a 17-30, 18-30, 30-28, 30-27, 21-19 victory on the road.
The rally secures a second seed for the Lions in the upcoming Gulf
South Conference tournament. UNA is now 19-14 overall and completes
conference play with a 9-3 mark. West Georgia falls to 5-6 in league
play and locks up the fourth seed in the tourney.
In
the first two games, UNA hit a combined -.033, while the Wolves
dominated from start to finish. The Lions made lineup changes to
start game three and came away with a 30-28 win.
After another close contest (30-27) in game four, the two teams
needed extra sets to complete the match in the fifth game. As a
team, UNA hit .435 in game five and held off three match points by
the Wolves.
With the 2-3 loss, UWG has now dropped nine of 12 five-game matches
on the year while the Lions are 2-2. It also marked the third
straight year UNA has rallied from an 0-2 deficit to win a match.
The Lions used the same script to down Harding in the 2005 GSC
championship match, the knocked off No. 1 Truman State the same way
in the semi-finals of the South Central Region tournament. All three
matches were on the opponents’ home floor.
Three players reached double digits in kills for UNA. Danielle
Palasak had 18 to lead the team while Whitney Sanders recorded 12
and Kelly Pratt got 11 on the night. Freshmen Katie Haseltine and
Shae Watkins also came through with a career-high dig totals at 21
and 12 respectively.
Palasak added 14 digs to complete a double-double performance along
with Alison Jacobs, who turned in 47 assists and 13 digs for the
Lions.
UNA will close out the regular season with a trip to
Birmingham-Southern on Nov. 3 at noon.
