SEARCY, Ark., - Andressa Martins had 20 kills and West
Georgia hit .330 as a team as the Wolves upset North Alabama 3-0 in
the second round of the Gulf South Conference volleyball tournament
Saturday afternoon in Searcy, Ark.
After falling to
the Lions twice in the regular season, UWG (26-11) put together a
solid effort to eliminate the three-time defending GSC champions.
The 22-30, 27-30, 22-30 loss for UNA (20-16) represents the first
time since 2003 the Lions do not capture the conference title. It is
also the first GSC tournament loss for head coach Stephanie Radecki,
who is now 10-1 at the event.
On Saturday, UNA
could do little to slow the Wolves’ offensive attack. Carolin
Schoeneck also had 15 kills for UWG, while Martins added 14 digs and
a .500 hitting percentage for the match.
Katie Haseltine
was the only UNA player to reach double digits in digs. The freshman
from Saint Louis had 11 for the match. Danielle Palasak led the Lion
hitting attack with 13 kills, while Alison Jacobs turned in 35
assits.
The Lions will now
have to await word from the South Central Region selection committee
to see if they receive a bid to next weekend’s NCAA tournament. |
