For the first time in 12 seasons, the University of North Alabama
volleyball team will not be making the trip to the NCAA Division II
tournament. Selections for the regional round of the 2007 NCAA
tourney were announced Monday, leaving the Lions at home during the
post-season for the first time since 1995.
UNA was in
position to make the tournament with a No. 6 ranking in the South
Central Region. However, an upset loss to West Georgia in the second
round of the Gulf South Conference tournament, coupled with a Wolves
win in the championship match to claim the automatic qualifier left
the Lions on the outside looking in.
West Georgia
and West Florida will represent the GSC at next weekend’s regional
tournament. UNA closes out the season with a 20-16 record.
The Lions did
manage to keep their streak of winning seasons to 14 straight,
dating back to the 1994 campaign. Other bright spots included three
players (Danielle Palasak, Jessica Hansen and Whitney Sanders)
earning first team All-GSC honors and one player (Alison Jacobs)
receiving second-team honors.
Palasak also
claimed the GSC East Division offensive player-of-the-week award
four times while Hansen set a new school record for digs in a season
with 691. |
