ATLANTA, Ga.,
– Trailing 0-2 on the road against
Division III’s defending national
champion Emory, the University of North
Alabama volleyball team rallied to win
three straight sets and knock off the
top-ranked Eagles 3-2 Tuesday evening at
the Woodruff PE Center.
Freshman Cara Gregg led the Lions with
15 kills while senior setter Alison
Jacobs turned in her second
triple-double in the last three matches
during the 19-25, 23-25, 28-26, 25-23,
15-9 victory. UNA has now played five
five-set matches in the last seven
outings, including a pair of comeback
wins after trailing 0-2.
On Tuesday, the Lions found themselves
facing an uphill climb after a pair of
close losses in the first two sets.
Sarah Roberts helped keep UNA alive in
game three with six of her 14 kills in
the two-point win.
In the fourth set, Gregg had five kills
as the Lions were able to hold on for
the 25-23 win. North Alabama never
trailed in the deciding set, opening up
a 7-2 lead before taking the match with
a 15-9 victory.
Jacobs, who was just named Gulf South
Conference Offensive Player of the Week
following her triple-double over the
weekend against Nova Southeastern,
accomplished the rare feat again with 11
kills, 38 assists and 10 digs. Gregg
also rounded out a double-double
performance with 10 digs while Brigid
O’Brien led all players on the floor
with 21 digs on the night.
As a team, the Lions turned in 10 total
blocks. Roberts led the way with seven
block assists while Jacobs added five on
the night.
Emory (8-2) was led by Alysse Meyer’s 16
kills and four blocks.
UNA, 4-8, will return home to host a
regional crossover next weekend
featuring teams from the GSC West
Division. The Lions will play Henderson
State at 7 p.m. on Friday before hosting
Southern Arkansas the next day at 1 p.m.
at Flowers Hall.
