WEST FLORIDA HANDS LIONS FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS WITH SWEEP

FLORENCE – West Florida had three players reach double digits in kills and hit .276 for the match in a 3-0 sweep over North Alabama Saturday in Gulf South Conference volleyball action at Flowers Hall. The 14-25, 24-26, 29-31 defeat was the first loss in conference play for UNA (10-9 overall, 3-1 GSC), which saw its seven-match winning streak snapped. West Florida improves to 11-8 overall with a 2-1 showing in GSC play and has now won six straight meetings over the Lions dating back to the 2007 season.

Kimberly Clark led the Argonauts’ balanced attack with 11 kills. UWF, however, had five players record at least eight kills and five players with at least seven digs for the day. North Alabama was led by Sarah Roberts’ 14 kills.

After a dominant 11-point win in the first set, the Argos had to hold off late UNA rallies and score extra points to pick up the next two victories. UWF had a 24-22 lead in the second set before the Lions scored twice to tie the game. The Argonauts got the win with a kill by Patricia Gandolfo followed by a UNA attack error.

In the third set, each team had three set points down the stretch before UWF pulled out the win. UNA had the first three opportunities, taking one-point leads at 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25. West Florida pulled even each time and took its first set point at 27-26. The Lions tied the game three more times before a kill by Clark ended the rally and gave West Florida the 3-0 victory.

Cara Gregg added 13 kills for the Lions while Alison Jacobs recorded seven kills, 36 assists and eight digs. Defensively, Brigid O’Brien and Lauren Greenhill led the team in digs with 15 and 12 respectively.

UNA will hit the road for another key GSC showdown next week. The Lions will travel to Livingston, Ala., to face GSC East-leading West Alabama on Tuesday. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus.
