VALDOSTA STATE VOLLEYBALL TEAM GETS FIRST-EVER WIN OVER LIONS

VALDOSTA, Ga., – Katie Onushko had 14 kills and Valdosta State defeated North Alabama in volleyball for the first time ever as the Blazers upended the Lions 3-1 Friday evening at the P.E. Complex on the VSU campus. After UNA took the first set 25-23, the Blazers won the next three, breaking the streak of 32 straight losses in the all-time series.

With the loss, UNA falls to 14-13 on the year with a 3-3 record in Gulf South Conference play. Valdosta State improves to 12-10, 3-4.

In the first set, the Lions trailed 23-22 before rallying for the victory. After a timeout by head coach Stephanie Radecki, UNA scored three straight points to secure the 25-22 win.

Although UNA hit .306 in the second set, it was the Blazers who came away with the 25-23 victory. Onushko led the way with five kills in the set as VSU tied the match at one set each.

Valdosta State raced out to a 15-4 lead in the third set and never let up. The Blazers hit .257 as a team and cruised to a 25-13 victory and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final set, VSU pulled away down the stretch for the 25-21 win. The Lions had a negative hitting percentage in the game with a -.026 showing.

Ruthie King and Irene Hannan rounded out the top hitters for the Blazers with 13 kills each.

Sarah Roberts had 10 kills for UNA. Alison Jacobs added 34 assists while four players reached double digits in digs including Lauren Greenhill (18), Kristin Zull (12), Jacobs (11) and Brigid O’Brien (10).

North Alabama will continue its GSC road swing on Saturday at West Florida. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at the UWF Fieldhouse.
