– A pair of standouts on the University of
North Alabama volleyball team have been
honored as two of the top players in the
South Region. Setter Alison Jacobs and
middle blocker Sarah Roberts each received
All-South Region honors by Daktronics and
the American Volleyball Coaches Association
(AVCA).
The Daktronics awards came first. Jacobs,
the 2009 Gulf South Conference East Division
Player of the Year, earned first-team honors
for the award that was voted on by sports
information directors from the GSC, Sunshine
State Conference and the Southern
Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
The senior from Elkhorn, Neb., recorded
1,215 assists for a 9.59 per-set average
last season. She added 253 kills (1.99 per
set), 266 digs (2.09 per set), 44 total
blocks (.35 per set) and 26 service aces.
She was named GSC East Player of the Week
twice and recorded three triple-doubles this
season, with two against ranked opponents.
Following the Daktronics announcement,
Jacobs received first-team honors by the
AVCA, which was voted on by head coaches
throughout the South Region. She is now
eligible for All-America honors by both
organizations.
After also receiving first team All-GSC
honors, Roberts added a second team
all-regional selection by Daktronics and a
first-team nod by the AVCA to wrap up her
junior season.
For the year, Roberts had 462 kills,
averaging 3.64 per-set to lead the GSC East
Division. The Maryville, Tenn., native was
third in the East in hitting percentage with
a .283 showing. She was a three-time GSC
Offensive Player of the Week honoree and
reached double digits in kills in 29
matches. She also led the team with 37
service aces on the year.
