NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Taking to the
court for the first time under new coach Terry Fowler, the
University of North Alabama women's basketball team came out on the
short end of a 75-50 score at Division I Belmont.
Belmont opened the game with a 6-0 run and a strong defensive effort
kept UNA from reaching double digits until there were less than
eight minutes remaining in the half.
The Bruins extended their lead to 17
points, 32-15, with 1:14 on the clock. However, a successful trip to
the free-throw line and three pointer by Chelsey Malone closed the
gap to 13, 33-20, at intermission.
After the break, Belmont extended its lead to 27. The Lions clawed
back to within 19, 68-49, with just over three minutes left but
could get no closer Amber Rutherford and Jessica Strucher each
scored 14 points for UNA.
Rutherford also recorded a game-high
eight boards.
Belmont outshot North Alabama, 44.3
percent (27-61) to 19.0 percent (11-58). However, the Lions
held the advantage in rebounds, 44-38.
