GET 77-72 OVERTIME WIN AT UWF TOURNEY
PENSACOLA, Fla., – The University of North Alabama
women’s basketball team erased a 15-point second-half deficit
against Harding Friday afternoon to pull out a 77-72 overtime
victory at the UWF Surf Burger Holiday Classic.
The victory improved the Lions’ overall record to 6-7 on the season
and represented just the second loss of the year for Harding (8-2).
The loss also snapped the Lady Bisons’ seven-game winning streak.
Jameica York scored 21 points on the day, including nine of the
Lions’
14 points in the extra period. The freshman from Mobile also sank
three free throws in the final 23 seconds of regulation as UNA tied
the game at 63-63 to force overtime.
The Lady Bisons dominated the first 20 minutes of the contest.
Harding hit 42 percent of its shots and held a 28-22 rebounding
advantage before taking a 36-24 lead at the half. A three-pointer by
Harding’s Chelsea McCarty on the opening possession of the second
half, gave the Lady Bisons their largest lead at 39-24.
North Alabama made its run with just over 10 minutes to play. A
layup up by Tandra Inmon with 5:22 remaining capped a 15-2 run and
gave the Lions their first lead of the second half at 54-53.
Neither team led by more than four points the rest of the way. A
layup by Harding’s Jacque Fredendall put the Lady Bisons on top
63-59 in the final minute of play before foul shots by York and
Chelsea Malone tied the game and forced overtime.
Malone finished with 12 points for UNA, while Amber Rutherford and
Jessica Strucher tossed in 12 points each. Rutherford also recorded
a double-double after pulling down 21 rebounds on the day.
The Lions will finish out its stay at the UWF tourney by facing
Southern Arkansas tomorrow at 1 p.m.
