FLORENCE –
Shay Ashford hit a three-point shot with 1.7 seconds remaining to give the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team an 80-77 victory over Ouachita Baptist Wednesday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The winning shot capped a game-high 23-point effort for the junior from Tupelo, Miss., who went 7-of-11 from beyond the arc.

UNA led by as many as 15 points in the game, including a 47-32 lead at the half. The Lady Tigers, however, chipped away over the final 20 minutes, and even took a 73-72 lead with 2:06 remaining.

The Lions responded with a three-pointer by Ashford on the next possession, and the two teams battled to a 77-77 tie in the final 56 seconds. Each team had chances to score in the closing minute, but couldn’t until Ashford’s three gave UNA the win.

The three-point victory avenges an 80-69 loss to the Lady Tigers on Nov.
18, and ups the Lions’ overall record to 7-8 on the year. OBU falls to 8-4.

Jameica York added 18 points and five assists for UNA, while Amber Rutherford tossed in 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Chelsea Malone rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 12 points on the day.

UNA will now turn its attention to Gulf South Conference play when the team travels to Montevallo on Jan 6. The two East Division schools are slated to square off at 5:30 p.m.
