VALDOSTA, Ga., - Valdosta State’s Carley Peterson grabbed an offensive rebound with three seconds remaining and put it back in for the winning basket as the Blazers edged North Alabama 53-52 Monday evening in Gulf South Conference women’s basketball action.

After calling a timeout, UNA was unable to get off a shot in the final three seconds, allowing the GSC East-leading Blazers to escape with the one-point home win. The loss drops the Lions’ overall record to 11-12 with a 4-4 mark in GSC play. VSU improves to 17-5, 7-1.

UNA, which led 24-21 at the half, had two players reach double digits in scoring. Amber Rutherford recorded a game-high 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Tandra Inmon added 12 points on the night.

The Lions will return home on Feb. 10 in another key GSC showdown. UNA will face West Georgia Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
