FLORENCE --
Chelsey Malone hit six three-point baskets and Amber Rutherford
added 22 points inside as the North Alabama women's basketball team
dumped West Alabama 78-61 in a key Gulf South Conference game at
Flowers Hall.
Beginning a four-game home-stand to close out the regular season,
the Lions are looking to play their way into the Gulf South
Conference Tournament.
The Lions jumped on West Alabama early and
built a 20-point lead by halftime at 41-21. West Alabama could never
get closer than 15 over the final 20 minutes and the Lions
eventually won by 17.
The win pushed UNA to 5-4 in the GSC and 12-12 overall. West Alabama
had been ahead of UNA in the league standings but the Lady Tigers
fell to 4-4 in the GSC and 16-7 overall.
Rutherford led UNA with 22 points, going 9-of-14 from the floor and
four-for-four from the line. Malone was six-of-10 on three-point
attempts and finished with 20 points.
Tandra Inmon added 13 points
for UNA. Rutherford and Jameica York had 11 rebounds each for UNA as
the Lions dominated the boards 45-30.
Jessica Thompson led West Alabama with 15 points and Kotreece Bender
added 11.
North Alabama host Montevallo on Monday night at 6 p.m.
