FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama
women’s basketball team was able to cut a 10-point deficit
with less than three minutes remaining to a single point in
the closing seconds, but could not get the final shot to
fall, dropping a 67-66 home decision to Montevallo Monday
evening.
The Lions trailed 63-53 at the
2:37 mark when Chelsey Malone’s three-point basket broke a
four-minute scoring drought for UNA. Another three-pointer
by Shay Ashford and baskets by Tandra Inmon and Amber
Rutherford helped the Lions pull to within a single point
with eight seconds remaining.
After a missed free throw by
the Lady Falcons, UNA had a chance for a game-winning
basket, but Inmon’s heavily-contested shot as time expired
was off the mark.
The loss drops the Lions to
12-13 overall with a 5-5 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
Montevallo improves to 14-10, with a 6-3 conference record
that gives it sole possession of second place in the East
Division.
The two teams battled to a
32-32 tie at the half. UNA, however, was able to build a
49-40 advantage with 12:16 remaining. Montevallo then used a
23-4 run to take control late in the game.
Rutherford
led the Lions with 16 points on the night. Ashford added 14
points for the Lions while Inmon tossed in 11.
UNA will host
West Georgia
in a key GSC East showdown next Tuesday (Feb. 20). Tip-off
is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
