FLORENCE
– The University of North Alabama women’s basketball team
overcame a poor shooting effort Tuesday evening to pick up a key
Gulf South Conference win over West Georgia, downing the Wolves
52-49 at Flowers Hall.
The Lions shot just 33 percent from the field, but held a 41-35
edge in rebounding on the night.
With the team already assured a berth in the upcoming GSC
tournament, the victory on Tuesday opened the door for the Lions
to finish as high as second in the East Division. UNA is 13-13
overall and is third in the division with a 6-5 GSC record. West
Georgia falls to 12-14, 4-8.
Amber Rutherford led all scorers with 22 points for the Lions.
The sophomore from Hatton did most of her damage from the free
throw line, going a perfect 16-of-16 from the stripe.
She also completed the double-double performance with 14
rebounds on the night.
Chelsey Malone hit four three-pointers and finished the game
with 14 points for UNA.
The Lions led 25-21 at intermission, and pushed the lead to 12
at 35-23 in the opening minute of the second half. West Georgia
responded and closed the gap in the final minutes of play. A
jumper by Rotesha Anderson made the score 48-47 with 1:05
remaining.
Rutherford, however, hit four straight free throws down the
stretch and the UNA defense allowed only one more basket to
secure the win.
The Lions will close out the regular season with a home game
against in-state rival Alabama-Huntsville. UNA will face the
Lady Chargers on 1 p.m. Saturday at Flowers Hall.
