SOUTHAVEN, Miss., –
The University of North Alabama women’s basketball team got out to a slow start and never recovered during a 79-60 loss to Southern Arkansas Thursday in the first round of the Gulf South Conference tournament at Southaven’s DeSoto Civic Center.

The Lions missed their first eight shots from the floor and failed to score for the game’s first 4:44, while SAU built an 8-0 lead. The Lady Muleriders extended their advantage to 16-6 and never relinquished the lead.

SAU standout Kim Davis scored a game-high 25 points and three other Lady Muleriders reached double digits in scoring on the night. UNA, which shot just 28 percent for the game, was led by Amber Rutherford’s 13 points. Shay Ashford added 10 points for the Lions.

UNA trailed by as many as 14 in the opening 20 minutes and was down
33-23 at the half after shooting just 23 percent from the floor. In the second half, a jumper by Brittany Godsey cut the lead to 38-30 with 16:50 remaining, but the Lions would get no closer.

With the loss, UNA closes its season with a 14-14 record in head coach Terry Fowler’s first season at the helm. The team improved its win total by eight games from last season and advanced to post-season play for the first time in four years.
