The University of North Alabama women’s basketball team matched the
No. 4 team in the county shot for shot and rebound for rebound
before falling 78-70 Saturday evening at Henderson State’s Duke
Wells Center.
The Lady Reddies (6-0) led 41-37 at intermission and extended their
lead to 15 points midway through the second half. The Lions’ Jameica
York, however, scored 13 of her 15 points in the final 20 minutes as
UNA kept the game close.
Amber Rutherford scored a team-high 21 points on the night while
Chelsey Malone also reached double digits for the Lions with 14
points.
HSU led by as many as seven points on the opening half before a pair
of free throws by York tied the score at 34-34 with 2:44 remaining.
The Lady Reddies ended the half on a 7-3 run to take a four-point
lead into the break.
In the second half, Henderson State jumped out to an 11-point lead
in the opening minutes and claimed a 70-55 advantage with 6:12
remaining. A three-pointer by Malone capped a 13-4 run by UNA to cut
the lead to 74-68, but the Lions would get no closer.
Rutherford capped a double-double on the night with 14 rebounds,
while York added four assists. For the game, UNA held a slight edge
in team shooting percentage (43.4 percent-42.4 percent) and rebounds
(39-38).
UNA, now 3-5 on the year, will travel to Miles College on Dec. 5 for
a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The Lions will return to Flowers Hall on Dec. 8
to face Georgia Southwestern at 7 p.m.
