VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The University of North Alabama women's
basketball team fell behind by eight points at halftime and
couldn't overcome the deficit as the Lions suffered their first Gulf
South Conference loss of the season to Valdosta State, 57-48.
The Lady Blazers led UNA 31-23 at the half and then outscored the
Lions by one over the final 20 minutes for the nine-point win. The
loss drops UNA to 7-8 overall and the Lions are now 1-1 in the GSC,
having downed West Florida on Saturday.
Chelsey Malone led the Lions with 14 points, including four
three-point baskets. Amber Rutherford added 11 points and seven
rebounds.
Leschelle Matthews led Valdosta State with 13 points and Nina Risto
added 12.
UNA shot just 39 percent from the floor, hitting 18 of 46 shots.
Valdosta State shot 40 percent from the floor and was 14-of-19 from
the free throw line.
VSU held a slim 32-30 rebounding advantage.
North Alabama will host Montevallo on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Flowers
Hall.
