FLORENCE -- Shay Ashford scored 17 points and pulled 10
rebounds to lead the University of North Alabama women's basketball
team to a 71-60 Gulf South Conference win over Montevallo at Flowers
Hall.
Ashford scored 11
of her points from the free throw line, hitting 11 of 12 attempts
from the charity stripe. Amber Rutherford added nine points and 12
rebounds and Tandra Inmon scored 13 points.
With the win, UNA
improved to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the GSC. Montevallo falls to 5-13
and 1-2.
The Lions built a
41-22 lead at halftime behind 51 percent shooting. The Lions held
Montevallo to just seven-of-31 shooting from the floor in the first
half. Montevallo made a run late in the second half but could get
no closer than six points.
Jennifer Hendricks
led Montevallo with 14 points and Katie Vanderhyden added 12 points.
UNA held a 46-39
rebounding advantage in the game but had 27 turnovers.
UNA hosts West
Alabama on Monday night at 6 p.m.
