FLORENCE -- North Alabama built a 17-point lead in the
first half and held off Alabama-Huntsville over the final 20 minutes
as the Lions downed the Lady Chargers 80-69 at Flowers Hall.
The win, a key
Gulf South Conference victory for UNA, improved the Lions record to
9-10 overall and 3-2 in league play. UAH falls to 9-9 and 2-3.
UNA led by 17
with 2:12 to play in the first and led 43-30 at intermission behind
50 percent shooting from the floor. The Lions then stepped it up in
the second half and shot 53.6 percent, while holding UAH to 36
percent shooting.
Junior Amber
Rutherford of Hatton led UNA with 23 points, giving her 1,034 for
her career and moving her into 10th place in school history past
Wanda Beckham. She was 11-of-13 from the floor and added seven
rebounds.
Senior Shay
Ashford of Tupelo, Miss., scored 15 points and pulled 14 rebounds.
Senior Tandra Inmon of Memphis, Tenn., also had an impressive outing
with 12 points and seven assists.
UNA held a slim
41-39 rebounding advantage over UAH but the Chargers hit 12
three-point baskets to nine for the Lions. The Lady Chargers hurt
themselves at the free throw line, making just 7-of-13.
North Alabama
plays at West Georgia on Tuesday.
