MONTEVALLO – After surging to a 13-point second-half
lead, the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team held
off a late Montevallo rally to pick up a 75-69 road victory Saturday
in Gulf South Conference action.
Amber Rutherford
and Shay Ashford scored 16 points each as the Lions evened their
overall record at 11-11 and climbed above the .500 mark in
conference play with a 4-3 showing. Montevallo falls to 5-17, 1-6.
UNA led 31-27 at
the half and held a 63-50 advantage with 5:52 remaining. The Lady
Falcons, however, were able to put together a 17-6 run and cut the
lead to two at 71-69 in the final two minutes of play. The Lions
were able to secure the win by hitting five-of-six free throws down
the stretch, including three by Ashford in the final 50 seconds.
Jameica York added
13 points, while Brianna Abrams rounded out UNA’s top scorers with
10 points for the game. Rutherford just missed a double-double after
pulling down nine rebounds.
The Lions will
travel to Livingston on Tuesday to take on West Alabama in another
key GSC showdown. The Tigers defeated UNA 72-51 on Jan. 21 at
Flowers Hall.
