FLORENCE – A three-point basket by Shay Ashford and four
free throws in the closing seconds broke a 63-63 tie and helped the
University of North Alabama women’s basketball team record a 70-63
win over West Florida at Flowers Hall.
The
win gives UNA a 5-5 record in the Gulf South Conference with two
games to play and guarantees the Lions a spot in the GSC post-season
tournament. UNA is now 12-13 overall. West Florida falls to 2-7 and
9-15.
UNA
led 41-33 at halftime and led by as many as 16 points in the game
before a West Florida rally tied the game at 63-63. Amy Drake, who
finished with 14 points, led the comeback with five three-point
baskets. Ashford then hit the critical three on a pass from Chelsey
Malone and the Lions used free throws to seal the win.
Amber
Rutherford led UNA with 17 points, Tandra Inmon had 16 and Ashford
scored 14 points and pulled 12 rebounds.
UNA
plays at Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday and closes its
regular-season at home next Tuesday against West Georgia.
