FLORENCE – A three-point basket by Shay Ashford and four free throws in the closing seconds broke a 63-63 tie and helped the University of North Alabama women’s basketball team record a 70-63 win over West Florida at Flowers Hall.

The win gives UNA a 5-5 record in the Gulf South Conference with two games to play and guarantees the Lions a spot in the GSC post-season tournament. UNA is now 12-13 overall. West Florida falls to 2-7 and 9-15.

UNA led 41-33 at halftime and led by as many as 16 points in the game before a West Florida rally tied the game at 63-63. Amy Drake, who finished with 14 points, led the comeback with five three-point baskets. Ashford then hit the critical three on a pass from Chelsey Malone and the Lions used free throws to seal the win.

Amber Rutherford led UNA with 17 points, Tandra Inmon had 16 and Ashford scored 14 points and pulled 12 rebounds.

UNA plays at Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday and closes its regular-season at home next Tuesday against West Georgia.
