FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women’s
basketball team used a 13-2 run midway through the second half to
grab a 10-point lead and hold on to knock of seventh-ranked West
Georgia 71-56 Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall.
Amber
Rutherford scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to pace a
balanced attack. Jameica York added 14 points for UNA while Chelsey
Malone tossed in 11 on the night.
UNA lost to the
Wolves 71-60 on Jan. 29 after hitting just 2-of-19 shots from
three-point range. At home, however, the Lions hit 8-of-16 from
beyond the arc, with five different players connecting on long-range
shots.
UWG led by as
many as seven in the opening 20 minutes. A free throw by the Wolves’
Rotesha Anderson made the score 26-19 with 7:07 remaining in the
half.
UNA closed the
half on a 15-4 run to take a 34-30 lead at the break.
West Georgia
used an early run in the second half to take a 40-39 lead. Baskets
by Rutherford, Danae Lawrence, Brianna Abrams and Brittany Godsey
helped the Lions grab the lead for good. A three-pointer by Godsey
capped the 13-2 run and put UNA on top 50-40 with 12:19 remaining
and the Lions never trailed again.
The win for the
Lions (13-14 overall, 6-6 GSC) secured the fourth seed in the East
Division in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament. It also
represented the first conference loss for the Wolves (23-3), who
entered the game with a perfect 10-0 showing in GSC play.
