SOUTHAVEN, Miss., – North Alabama got a career-high 25
points from Jameica York, but it would not be enough as the Lions
suffered a 68-62 loss to Christian Brothers Wednesday in the opening
round of the Gulf South Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at
the DeSoto Civic Center.
The loss ends
UNA’s season at 13-15 after a second consecutive trip to the
conference tourney.
CBU used a
24-10 run that covered the final minutes of the first half and first
seven minutes of the second half to take control of the game. The
Lions led 33-29 after a jumper by York before a buzzer-beating
three-pointer by CBU’s Erin Nigh cut the lead to a single point at
the break. In the second half, the Bucs began to establish dominance
down low, scoring 12 points in the paint in the opening minutes of
play.
The play from
the post opened up the outside shooting for CBU. A three-pointer by
Katie Hume put the Bucs on top 49-42 with 11:21 remaining and the
Lions would never take the lead down the stretch.
Three-point
shooting hurt the Lions, who hit just 4-of-20 from beyond the arc.
CBU hit 48 percent from the floor, including a 54.5 percent showing
from three-point range.
Sheena DeBose
led the Bucs with 20 points, while Nigh added 13 for the game. No
other player for North Alabama reached double digits in scoring.
