FLORENCE – A last-second shot by Shay Ashford was waved
off by the officials, sealing a 61-60 victory by second-ranked Delta
State Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The shot came after an
offensive rebound following Tanda Inmon missed a free throw with .4
second remaining. Officials immediately ruled that the shot did not
count, ending the game.
The Lions (2-3)
trailed by as many as 15 in the second half, but slowly chipped away
at the lead, cutting the deficit to a single point, then tying the
score in the final minute of play. A pair of free throws by Ashford
tied the game at
59-59 at the
1:22 mark, but the Lady Statesmen responded with a turnover and
layup by Lamaesha McAdory with 11 seconds remaining.
The Lions got
one last shot with Inmon drawing the foul with less than a second to
play.
Ashford scored
15 of her game-high 17 points in the second half. Inmon also
finished with double figures with 15 points while Amber Rutherford
tossed in 11 points for the Lions.
Delta State
(8-0) out-rebounded the Lions 39-25 but committed 21turnovers on the
day. Jessica Boyd led DSU with 14 points. The Lady Statesmen held a
31-16 advantage after holding UNA to 16 percent shooting from the
floor in the opening 20 minutes of play.
