FLORENCE – For the second consecutive game, the
University of North Alabama women’s basketball team was unable to
overcome a double-digit half-time deficit, falling to Arkansas Tech
78-66 Monday evening at Flowers Hall.
Two days after
rallying from a 15-point half-time deficit against second-ranked
Delta State, only to lose by a single point, the Lions (2-4) again
found themselves in a hole at intermission. UNA shot just 28 percent
from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and trailed the Golden Suns
46-25 at the break.
A fierce
comeback in the second half pulled the Lions to within single digits
in the final five minutes, but ATU was able to connect on big shots
and hit key free throws down the stretch to preserve the win. Four
players reached double digits in scoring for the Golden Suns,
including Amanda Grappe’s team-high 20 points.
The Lions were
led by Amber Rutherford’s game-best 24 points. The senior did most
of her damage from the free throw line, hitting 12-of-12 from the
charity stripe. Jessica Strucher also reached double figures with 11
points after hitting three-of-six three-point attempts.
ATU’s largest
lead was 24 points midway through the first half. UNA had 18
turnovers in the opening stanza, but committed only seven in the
second half to the Golden Suns’ 11.
The Lions will
remain at home for their next game with a Wednesday-night match-up
with Mid Continent University at 7 p.m.
