SEARCY, Ark. — Amber Rutherford’s game-high 39 points was
not enough Saturday evening as the University of North Alabama
women’s basketball team dropped an 84-81 overtime game at Harding.
The loss drops
the Lions overall record to 3-6 on the season while Harding improves
to 8-2. Turnovers proved costly for UNA, which committed 27 in the
contest, including two in the final 31 seconds of the game. The Lady
Bisons converted back-to-back steals into baskets in the closing
seconds to turn an 81-80 deficit into the three-point win.
The two teams
battled to a 71-71 tie at the end of regulation, marking the fifth
time in the last nine meetings UNA and Harding would go into
overtime. The Lady Bisons improved to 6-3 all-time in the series and
3-2 in overtime games.
Chelsey Malone
and Danae Lawrence also reached double digits in scoring for UNA
with 12 and 11 points respectively. Rutherford posted a perfect game
from the free throw line, going 13-for13 on the night. Harding was
led by Catherine McMenamy’s 21 points.
The Lions will
remain in Arkansas to face Ouachita Baptist on Dec. 17. Tip-off is
set for noon Monday at the OBU campus in Arkadelphia.
