UNA WOMEN CAN’T OVERCOME SLOW START AGAINST VALDOSTA STATE

VALDOSTA, Ga. –
Valdosta State built a large first-half lead and never let North Alabama back in the game Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference women’s basketball action. The Lady Blazers built a 44-29 lead at the break and UNA shot just 28 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes in the 69-55 road loss.

Amber Rutherford led the Lions with 15 points, while freshman Dana Jackson added 14 for the game. Lacy Lewis also reached double figures with 10 points as UNA fell to 9-10 overall with an even 2-2 mark in GSC play. With the win, VSU improves to 13-4, 3-0.

Valdosta State took advantage of its size advantage, holding a 35-29 advantage in rebounding with 13 second- chance points and out-scoring the Lions in the paint 38-16. UNA didn’t help its cause, committing 20 turnovers that led to 28 points for the Lady Blazers.

Tamika Booker led VSU with 13 points for the game.

UNA will not play again until next Saturday when the Lions travel to Huntsville for another GSC match-up against Alabama-Huntsville. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Spragins Hall.
